Introducing Network Analysis as a Research Technique . These are the seminar slides I used at Canberra University’s Inter-University Research Workshop Program , on Wednesday the 30th of January 2008. The seminar was organised into three sessions.
Session one:
- provided a brief history of network analysis;
- positioned network analysis in the research traditions;
- explained why network analysis is useful, and why it is gaining traction now; and
- provided some examples, across disciplines, where network analysis is being used.
Session two:
- explained the differences between social, organisational and business network analysis;
- listed some of the visualisation and analysis tools that are available, and described their strengths and weaknesses;
- showed some examples of the various maps (visualisations) that can be produced; and
- introduced the concepts of one and two mode networks, and attributes.
Session three:
- discussed how data might be collected and structured;
- showed attendees how to bring their data into UCINET and NetDraw ;
- discussed some ethical considerations; and
- finished by providing some presentation tips.
